ANGELS ON HORSEBACK

The old cold wind that ushers us in
It causes the chattering of teeth
It flicks through cavities of frosted glass
That butterflies lie beneath

With her rosy cheeks and her pouting lips
There lies your favourite love
Oh to gather and fold her in your arms
So surely as a glove

Thinks. A cricket match, let’s go I cry
On Saturday this week
It’s Somerset and Lancashire
Bring Muff and Bess for a treat

But Rosemary might be busy
She’s mending her old clocks
And balancing several old ladies
On top of her ivory locks

And she’s fetching vicars from hospital
Who are lying doggo in the grass
Whilst Pogle cavorts in the garden
And Mr.Bacup falls on his ass

Oh why is the mother so busy
When there’s cricket and family to see
The aussies know how to keep wicket
And there’s kittens here, one, two and three

Do you know that the will is waiting
When the periscope’s starting to rise
And the handcart’s been left at the station
Why and wherefore I cannot surmise

The old and the vanishing stutue
Of old bully Buller in bed
And the birds are taking advantage
Of the plumage on old Bullers’ head

For sacrifices have to be managed
And managed by no other than he
For the lads are back in the pavilion
And the ladies are missing their tea

So boys let the cider flow freely
As we stand and shout, God save the Queen
And munch on our angels on horseback
For angels on horseback are we

BADGERS RETREAT

“Well when I got there, there was green mould on everything.
I mean the whole thing was utterly inedible.
I tried on all sorts of funny things,
but at the end of the day it was only a piece of cheese.”

I never should have experienced something like this
To me it’s the way it is, how about you? You?
you never should have experienced something like this
though it’s easy to be the same
all of it’s poop. POOP………………..

It’s the sort of conversation you have with someone who simply won’t listen.
“Now then, stop that, we won’t have that…………………….
“ and it doesn’t matter how often you say it, it’s always the same thing etc……..
“and you can go in the other room and play with your things
RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!……………….”

“Straight!, it’s not the only way to be, sometimes I can go upside down as often as I like.
I can climb under the bedclothes, and I can do well……..almost anything really.”

Oh! I’m as wise as an Aberdeen Angus you see, look at me.
I’m forever gliding around, like a duck out of luck, all muck around you.
And if your dad doesn’t like it, make sure you’ve told him to see how you’ve found it
And then go out in the fields, take the ball and dive in the street and the
Cows come round you and don’t let you fall, cos your friends gone to
Parties without you, nothing can serve you well,
Anything there than yourself cos you’re always in love oh
Love is a wonderful thing.
Tickety Tonk.

Well I’m not frightened of them and neither was my father.
They all formed a circle and then just started mooing.
Tickety Tonk. Tickety Tonk.

Oh badger my lad, what did you see today?
Was it a wonderful place to be seen?
What did they say when you went to the dentist today?

“I’ve got a crown, I’m lonely and I’ll let you down,
don’t see me as some kind of saviour in all of the town.
Oh not me, no not me, children see, oh love is wonderful thing.”

Hick Hack Hock, money made, why won’t it stop?

Look out, here comes the big one again!!!!!!!!!!

“I am not a savage, I shall not do it.”

BETTER NEIGHBOURS

Oh! Look at me now, gliding in light, shining so bright and look at the clowns,
Over the town and they’re all unannounced and they’re out they’re faking,
You, oh look at you look at you, now, checking it out for the lonely,
On a bright sunny day, look at the clouds they’ve gone away,
Something better than this cos it’s old, and it’s old and unusual now.

Hope! Hope is a wonderful place, but you could have been looking for
Grace in the facts, hardened light and you’ll see, see that there’s clouds and they’re making it
Sunday, better neighbours now, better neighbours bow, better neighbours now.

Somebody’s broken the toast, the toast has gone cold and brown
Somebody fell on the ground, making it special today that they know,
Know that they’re dreaming of something to say, look at the people anyway.
They’re something to see when the light comes down, he’s giving it out to the town
It’s incredibly dark out there, incredibly dark anywhere, out there.

He’s dressed in his whites, cos whites are the only colour, always the same old thing
Making it bright, the bacon and egg on his head makes them stare instead
And we are on offer now.

Chorus
Look at the wonderful thing, look at him half a new brain,
Let’s sing don’t break another person on the kerb, don’t be absurd,
It’s a wonderful place to be certain you’re sad, sad, sad,
And sat on the ground.

Lionel Palairet’s place has been taken by Archie (McLaren)
They say he’s a difficult man but see what he can do
With his egg and his spoon and UHU, look at him go, look at the flow,
It’s a reamarkable thing, oh! It’s a privilege placing their armies,
They’re so indifferent to you, and come on Korty now,
It’s the old mans’ birthday party, the old mans’ birthday party.

Oh! Wonderful beard, wonderful seeker, make it true
Something’s gone right with the world today, right with the world in your eyes,
Right with the song that you sing, this better thing you are
Better neighbours now, Better neighbours bow, Better neighbours now

Chorus
Look at the wonderful thing, look at him half a new brain,
Let’s sing don’t break another person on the kerb, don’t be absurd,
It’s a wonderful place to be certain you’re sad, sad, sad,
And sat on the ground.

BOTCHED APPLES

Botched apples now
Botched apples gone to the friendly side
Botched apples now
Sing slightly simpler
Oh you sow, now

Oh apples lying on the ground, you
Botched apples now
At the sign of the cow
Living so merrily
Wait for squandering now

Botched apples now
Botched apples in the mouth of my tiny cow
Oh it’s Christmas
It’s Christmas time in sow

Botched apples gone
Botched apples gone to the friendly side

CALLING TO YOU FROM SOMEWHERE

I’m calling to you from somewhere
I’m calling to you from somewhere
Like a shining fish, I’m swimming round in circles
I’m stuck waiting at the station, you say

I’m calling to you from nowhere
I’m calling to you from nowhere
In the afternoon of summer, sparkling, like a
Shimmering shoal of our own, you say

Chorus For here, in this low place, I am dancing
All my life, and still I’ve been reminded, and now
With this little boy’s life, hidden in my hands
His dreams are welcome

I’m calling to you from somewhere
I’m calling to you from somewhere
Like a whisper, speak it softly, strength is our salvation
It’s the wisdom of waiting, right now
I called to you from somewhere, now
Come on Archie, there’s a whirlpool of beauty
Out there

Chorus For here, in this low place, I am dancing
All my life, and been so sheltered, and now
With this little boy’s life, hold it in your hands
His dreams are welcome

CROWN OF MAY

Spring comes into summertime
And with it comes the day
Amongst the brambles, blooms the hawthorn flower
And with the blossom comes the hour

Breaks the daylight, shining through the trees
Softly flickering like whispers on my hands
And when July comes calling, Summertime
Bringing garlands and with a kiss
The wedding band

Lest I forget to shout up to the branches
The canopy of trees shall sound the day
And with all my heart I’ll sing, sing the morning chorus
Till darkness steals my breath away

And I shall call for her, Beginning
Smiling with the morning
And gracefully go towards the arch
And with a leap
Through fires of well established ages
We shall fly

DOWN DEAD CROW

Look to the left and what did you see
See the whites of their eyes in the country
Well there’s something there that’s missing
And it’s nothing you would know
When you’re down among the dead men with the crows

Chorus This is your last goodbye
You might never get a better chance than this
You run to the top and never look back
With the sound of the wind at your tail
With the sound of the wind at your tail

And you looked for the sun but the sun didn’t shine
And you wondered why your children kept crying all the tine
From the first to the last it’s a long way to go
When you’re down among the dead men with the crows

Chorus This is your last goodbye
You might never get a better chance than this
You run to the top and never look back
With the sound of the wind at your tail
With the sound of the wind at your tail

And the seas starts to scream and isn’t even heard
Cos there’s still so much silver to be made with a word
And the word just means nothing and it won’t set you free
And youdon’t want to live like a refugee
Refugee

Chorus This is your last goodbye
You might never get a better chance than this
You run to the top and never look back
With the sound of the wind at your tail
With the sound of the wind at your tail

FLOW

Start, again
Pray for those who wonder, how
Standing all your life
Your questions answered here.

Start, now
Build bridges for the space inside your head
A critical moment
Drive towards the light and see
Your destiny’s
Here

Chorus
For now it’s over
Let’s drive towards the city
Rride around on our eiderdown
Speak to me
Speak to us now
The wider the bridge
The smaller the show
Tonight

Stand, now
The island’s further than I thought
And now I’m sinking
I’m sinking down
And we’ve tried our best
Take our time cos it leaves us
Drifting, floating down
The tide comes in and washes us
Our lives flow together
Let’s go dancing

Chorus
For now it’s over
Let’s race towards the city
Rride around on our eiderdown
Speak to me
Speak to us now
The wider the bridge
The smaller the show

Takes time to flow through
The wave is over
Watch the ripples
Seek the sparkles
All around
Wave

FOR THE HUNDREDS OF SAILS

Try to be careful with this. Reminds me of something I’ve missed
Mistakes from my wandering memory sending a kiss
For the hundreds of sails, where the light never fails
I said with a glint of an eye, a last unexpected goodbye
Bathe me in softness and spring, and teach me the tune that you bring
As we fall asleep, the sleep of a slumbering child

Well there’s room at the end for the fools
And places for drunkards who fall off their stools
And children sing choruses softly, to bring you the news,
News of the very last day
Well there’s snow on your feet and there’s clouds
And history’s chosen a few of you now
And the world is a wonderful place, you can choose your own way
Sleep with me now, to the tune of the very last song

Well the madmen are ranging from babies to sages
And choices and chances are few
And the sound of the mysteries hollow and whispering now to you
And ancestral voices are giving no quarter
Blind from the light in her eyes
And the wary among us are left to discover the ruse
And the clues to his clever disguise

Well with cable and crossfire you see
It’s getting much harder to gain a decree
And people just stare at the victims who get in for free
Well you’re closer to heaven just here
Lamenting the architect standing so near
Cos he fell to earth with a fever, is perfectly clear
Clear to me now
With a smile and a wave and a tear

Well the madman are raging, it never stops raining
As you stumble your way through the crowd
And the century’s mysteries turn into victories loud, so proud
And Methodist ministers speak to their sisters, blind from the light in their eyes
And the wary among us are left to discover the ruse
And the clues to his clever disguise

So try to be gentle with her
And don’t force the lines that should never be heard
Cos this one’s much bigger than you
And all that is left is the view
Oh let me sleep
The sleep of a slumbering child
Just let me sleep
The sleep of a slumbering child

GODDESSES

I will sing for the other side, and
send some moving pictures.
tell the thoughts of the thousand lines,
wait until the summer comes.

I will fight for the winning side, the side that takes me over,
In my dreams. In my themes.

The drama’s over till the subject comes,
It matters not to me
matters not to me.
the thunder rages and the, desert silence sings to me.
There’s no surprises here, there’s no surprises there.
There’s no difference anywhere,
Come to mother.
Come to father.

I will fight for the winning side.
that brings a home and shelter

GODS GOOD EARTH

Put the clocks back, and put on your old hat
And feel the warmer weather coming back again
The earth is calling; ah you’d better wake up now
As the signs of springtime, pushing through God’s good brown earth

Chorus
Let’s go to the sea, spend some time with me
Wake up you sleepy person, grab that lead
And let’s go dancing down the street.
Cos if you’re lonely and scared, I will find you there
Tomorrow’s looking good to me.
No need to run it looks so fair to me.

Take the small ones, way out in the garden
Picking daises and seeing sheep for the very first time.
We are your friends now; we’re up on your table.
Nice with gravy we shall be, make sure you make the best from me.

Chorus
Let’s go to the sea, spend some time with me
Wake up you sleepy person, grab that lead
And let’s go dancing down the street.
Cos if you’re lonely and scared, I will find you there
Tomorrow’s looking good to me.
No need to run it looks so fair to me.

We’ve been through difficult times, it’s time to recognise it,
Keep the spaces free, honouring our founding fathers.
We’ve been to the world and back, lazy faces waltzing,
And are dreaming of the future
We’ve got a future, dreaming, dream on

Family’s here, and family’s there
And the smiles on their faces speak to me
They’re appearing on clouds and on fences.
Let’s have a great big party, invite all your friends cos they’re arty.
Light some candles, burn them all.
Across that great divide we’ll fall.

Chorus
Let’s go to the sea, spend some time with me
Wake up you sleepy person, grab that lead
And let’s go dancing down the street.
Cos if you’re lonely and scared, I will find you there
Tomorrow’s looking good to me.
No need to run it looks so fair to me.

Just put the clocks back, and put on your old hat
And feel the warmer weather in God’s good brown earth.

GOODNIGHT AND FAREWELL TO YOU

Goodnight to you my friend goodbye
Into the gentle night we fly
The storytellers’ tellings through
Goodnight and farewell to you

I wish you rest when work is done
When winds they chill and blister
Together we’ll glide as colours fly
Through fields of natures whisper

Goodnight to you my friend goodbye
Into the gentle night we fly
Take my hand the crying’s through
Goodnight and farewell to you

So when you wake don’t shed a tear
For I am with you still my dear
For in my heart we’ll never part
Though love is over, don’t turn away

Goodnight to you my friend goodbye
Into the gentle night we fly
The storytellers’ tellings through
Goodnight and farewell to you
Goodnight and farewell to you

GRANNY GOES DANCING ON THURSDAYS

Granny goes dancing on Thursdays
On Wednesday she goes on the 23
To have her hair done on the cheap
At Dorothy’s
She left her handbag there once
The brown on with the loose zipper
And picnicked all the way to the shops
And back again
You should have seen her face when they told her they’d got it
She usually went with Alice
And danced with Harry Green
You know Harry
Died a couple of years ago
What do you mean you saw him las
t week?
You must have been dreaming old boy
Couldn’t have been Harry
They used to work at Grosvenors together
She was in the office
And he was a French polisher on pianos
And the place smelt of brasso
And life to them was as unpredictable
As an ornamental duck
Never went abroad
Couldn’t trust the food
But always went dancing on Thursdays
She said it was what kept her going
But the parkies made her cough
I told her that’s what they were there for
What did she expect them to do, tricks?
And she laughed
And her face turned up in the corners
And her rosy cheeks shone like nectarines in the sunshine
76 next June
And all me own teeth she would say
But the truth always came out in the end
We buried her last week
And it rained for a bit
But later it stopped and the sun came out
Most of her friends turned up
When you get to that age
They must wonder who’s next
Funny, I thought it’d be Jimmy
I never thought it’d be me.

GUILD OF FABULISTS

We are the Guild of Fabulists
Don’t say we didn’t warn yer
Compiling many lists and grysts
And clobbering passing lists

Chorus
Bare bones are on us
Bare bones are sticking in our skin
Bare bones are wobberling around
In our fabulist

We are only fabulists
To skewer and stab and pinch and nab
And put your treasures in a bag
And slither way in the darkness

Chorus
Bare bones are on us
Bare bones are sticking in our skin
Bare bones are wobberling around
In our fabulist

We are the Guild of Fabulists
Let’s have a scabby chorus
We’ll bellow and holler and make a fuss
It’s difficult to ignore us

Hark I hear the fabulist
I think I’ve gone and got the gist
And shake me fist and hiss
And persuade them to go away

Chorus
Bare bones are on us
Bare bones are sticking in our skin
Bare bones are wobberling around
In our fabulist

We are the Guild of Fabulists
Don’t say we didn’t warn yer
Compiling many lists and grysts
And messing about in the corner

HOLD THE MORNING

Hold the morning, I just can’t wait to stop
Feel the sunshine hours; hold the morning just for me.
Just a taste of spring, just a taste of you
I don’t need another winter; I’ve got my simple things to do.

Chorus
When I saw signs that you’d been here
Cos I’ve been skipping down the years
I’ve been crawling through the mire,
Blind, but I’m still alive
Hold the morning just for me.

Squeeze the sunshine out; oh wait until the cadence falters
Promise me that you won’t alter, promise me you’ll be my wife.
I’d like the right to roam, like the right to a home,
And fill the place with flowers, oh pretty flowers,
And smile beneath the showers.

Chorus
When I saw signs that you’d been here
Cos I’ve been skipping down the years
I’ve been crawling through the mire,
Blind, but I’m still alive
Hold the morning just for me.

Just a taste of summer, just a taste, a taste of you,
Springtime used to be my sister; I never felt the way I held the cue.
Let it roll from my eyes, let it roll from my eyes
Feel the sunshine hours; hold the morning just for me.

Hold the morning, I’m not ready for it all,
Let it slide from my sight; hold the morning just for me.

KITCHEN WITH SPRINKLES

The table was ready for supper
And a difficult meal had been cooked
And pussy’s been shoved out the cat flap
And nothing had been overlooked

But then had the hound been invited
Will the hound run about on a spree?
And water the kitchen with sprinkles
I suppose we shall just have to see

Then suddenly all’s in an uproar
The guest have arrived in a rush
They’re waiting in line for the gong to be sounded
And Hilary’s started to blush

Her husband is up on the table
Beginning an oratorical din
At the sound of his voice we covered our ears
As a bevy of children came in

They will now sing for their supper
With limited skill I perceive
There’s yesterday’s goo on the dishes
How standards have slipped I believe

I’d venture to say. It’s your ego
That fills up your soul with this sin
And the dog’s digging deep in the garden
I think she had better come in

MAKE THE RIGHT SALAD

Make the right salad, pork and beans
Waiting for the angle of the silent means
And your own, waiti in the sun
Wait in the armchair for your child
Pork and beans
Shelter and screaming for their cheese
You can know
Vaulting over fire stations Isn’t far
Think of your own, your fathers car
And it’s only, 17th century wisdom
Hold on to your home and your song

Gardens, waiting for lovers of kindness
Dehydrated by the sun
Looking diwn, they’re waiting
All gone, perhaps we’ll get more of the lesson soon
Aye aye aye aye aye aye
And we’’l go off to church
Down in the chancel the tinsel of
Christmas is over
Looking out, so many brambles here

So make the right salad, pork and beans
All of the inbetweens
Can be sold, some
Nonsense song better choose
La la la la la la la la etc
Nonsense song better change
soon

July 2007

OUT YOU GO MY LAD

Oh there’s a knee, it’s prodding in my back.
I’m sure I hear the song get out, get out, get out of the bed you’re in the way.
And go out, go out, it’ll be easier for you
I’d like some tea

Go in the garden it’s the snow
Out you go my lad you’ll go
Don’t moan, don’t groan, don’t whine it’s fine
Take the doggy and go
Out of the house in the snow
Snow on the ground
Snow snow snow on the ground
Snow snow snow snow snow on the hound

And don’t you look so sad my lad, it’s out to the park we’ll go
Cos when that knee goes into thee
My fear of slack won’t hold me back
Put the pony on, put the porridge on
Put the porridge on
And even a scone.

PARCUMPERICUM

As I walked out on a fine spring day
I spied you as you sat on the branch of a tree
You were pretending to be a bird
Cos you’d been eating parcumpericumparcumpircum
Oh your dad used to relish this famous thing parcumpericumparcumpircum
I said “can I come up to your tree and play on the branch with you
Cos you look nice, nice enough to be with
On a lovely sunny day, sunny day today
And you offered me parcumpericumparcumpircum
And I said “no” I’m not fond of it, because it’s full of lots of funny fishy things in it
And it’s a bit too strong, and you said
“oh! Oh that’s a shame because
me and me lad used to sit on the tree eating
parcumpericumparcumpircum

No danger of falling onto the spiky railings below
No danger of falling onto the slightly pointed railing below
and anyway I’ve been eating parcumpericumparcumpircum
So I said a fine thing, “Can I sing with you?”
“Yes” she said, sing parcumpericumparcumpircum.”
So we went in and we had a cuppa tea and we sat in front of the fire
And we got very cosy and we had a bit of a kiss
She’s my miss. We’re still there today
She’s eating parcumpericum , parcumpericum , parcumpericum , parcumpericum ,
parcumpericum , parcum, pircum
parcumpericum , parcumpericum , pa.

POGLES’ LULLABY

Don’t stray from my arms you little hound

Everybody’s gathered round, bow wow wow, hound
I loked at you hard out the corner of my eye
I could see you’re a sweet little fellow, oh!

Oh Mrs.Pogle come to my arms and sleep beside me
I will keep you warmer than you’ve been before
Have a little snore on the door
Don’t wake the pussy on the floor

Go round and round the garden
Round and round the garden
One, two, three, Mrs.Pogle and me
I saw a hound, oh close your eyes my hound
Ruff, ruff, ruff.

Dean Thatch 20th December 2004

RESPOND TO ME

“Come on, gather round you lambs, all of you
oh! Look my lambs, there’s a little bit of kindness
dripping from fingers, little bitty lingers
don’t be sad if it doesn’t understand, or respond
little bitsa clever thing sing.”

Chorus
Respond to me, respond to me, the blighter won’t respond to me
Respond to me, respond to me, the blighter won’t respond.

Early birdies, seven in the morning, go and get a barker, ruff ruff ruff!
Out in the garden, pick a bit’a steamy, bright-eyed barker, clever thing sing.

Chorus

Spinning, dipping heart is racing, bonzos, pussies, sunny sunny places
It’s the pleased to see you tail, teasing the fishes and the whoopsies
Soggy little pussy in the pond and in disgrace

Chorus

So let’s ramble, gamble in the garden, sugar magnolia, croci kiss.
Spring’s abundant, tease her with a little bit’a sausage and cheesy, let’s have a stick

Chorus

Laughing little clever thing, full to bursting, chomping at the children, peering through the railings,
Big googly eyes, so optimistic, watering the lettuces, picking up tricks.

Chorus

SLEEPY LITTLE CREATURE OVER THERE

There’s a sleepy little creature, sleepy little creature over there
She won’t bite me I’m not frightened, sleepy little creature over there.

There’s a furry little creature, furry little creature over there
She won’t bite me I’m not frightened, furry little creature over there.

Out in the garden running round my legs,
They’ve got tiny claws buried in the hedge.
Up the tree they go those dear little creatures,
Furry little creatures in the sunshine near me.

There’s a furry little creature, furry little creature over there
Don’t you bite me I’m not frightened, furry little creature over there

There’s a furry little creature, furry little creature over there
Don’t you bite me I’m not frightened, furry little creature over there
furry little creature over there.
furry little creature over there.

SOFT GREEN SURFACE OF THE FIELDS

Soft green surface of the fields
Heaven all around me as I kneel
Cherries on the table for a Sunday teatime
Glory, glory everywhere I feel

Are dancing with a leap
Little ones are waking fast asleep
Bury me below you on a frosty morning
In this quiet earth I shall be

And if you shine down on me
Kindly sprinkle some kindness
For it has to be worth noting that the
Heron hasn’t spotted our fish

So Ziz and Zaz and Blackie don’t you worry such a lot
History is speaking to us sorry I forgot
To feed you through the summer do I kneel
While all of you are craving for a meal

Soft green surface of the fields
Heaven all around me as I kneel
Bury me below you on a frosty morning
In this quiet earth I shall be

SPARROWFALL

One by one they drift
Downwards, spiralling
Tiny crystals and fluttering feathers
Through channelling winds trhey are with us
Smiling
And singing through the winter sunshine
Take me to where the warmth is
Because I am happy when you are here
When you go
The loneliness is too hard
But still they go
And I die with gladness

SWEET COMMUNION OF THE HEART

On the death of my mother Edna May Whittall
On February 8th 2007 with love from my father
And me

A breath of air, a glimpse of sea
This boat can carry you to me
Just turn around, and I’ll be there
Let’s be in the spring, let’s be in the spring

Oh, I’ve been waiting, such a while
To hear your voice and see that smile
Our house was built on a love that heals
We’ll walk on golden beaches
We’ll walk on frosted fields

Sweet communion of the heart
So softly speak to me
And send you swiftly through the silence
Such sweet mystery you are
To me

TEAR DOWN THE RED MIST

Old timer, where are the trains you spotted?
Where are the kings that you served till the end of the day
Stand up for all the wisdom that they’ve spoken and
Your hearts been broken, hearts are breaking now

Old art, slammed the door on me, dressed up in its finery
Stout fellows watching the tide turning on its side
Turn around for me, and

Chorus
Tear down the red mist, it clashes with my eyes
It’s who you know not what you did, that is my surprise, and
Pick up your pipes my friend, and play that tune for me
The one from Brittany, the poor mans litany

Fortune favours the fortunate, let it all come soon
While the minister’s his messages to speak from his favourite tune
Oh country, oh my country, I can’t imagine leaving
Oh it’s good to see the sunshine, discover hidden meanings

Chorus
Tear down the red mist, it clashes with my eyes
It’s who you know not what you did, that is my surprise, and
Pick up your pipes my friend, and play that tune for me
The one from Brittany, the free mans litany

So cruise on down that carousel
Visit the arm you knew, back on that island, and
Thanks for coming back today, find yourself
Flying back to my home, dancing in that stream
Oh the colours you have seen

Chorus
Tear down the red mist, it clashes with my eyes
It’s who you know not what you did, that is my surprise, and
Pick up your pipes my friend, and play that tune for me
The one from Brittany, the free mans litany

THE ANGELS WERE THERE FOR ME

“Today we went to a beach, and stayed there all afternoon”

“The sands here, are mainly composed of small grains of granite,
and are painful to walk on, in bare feet, for a man of my weight.”

“It’s now too hot to go on the plot, so I’ll sit and think a while and drink barley water
, like everyone oughter, who suffers a little from bile.”

He’s gone, going through the changes, befriending people you don’t wanna know.
Hard to be certain, changes come to everyone and then, you’ll go.

Chorus I was lost, I was there for the taking, and the angels were there for me,
And they missed me around at Christmas, and wanted to be my friends.

All these gifts and drifting mines, still can’t see the warning signs,
Over the mountains and down to the shore, like the summer, you won’t last forever now.

Chorus Were you lost, were you there for the taking, and the angels were there for me,
And to think it’s the present picture, things that could not be named.

“In the summerhouse I’m sitting, looking at a garden wall,
but in my imagination it’sa huge baronial hall,
gardens, parklands all around it,
knights and ladies wander there, and surely this

Chorus This is it, this is dear old England, no one else could seem so fair
Though the tune hasn’t changed, gone forever

Others have been rearranged.

“A fine warm morning, and I had to make two visits to the convenience on the quayside.”

THE BOSUM OF APHRODITE

My love lies, my love lies
In a frame of morning
In a frame of morning
Whispering down
Side a’facing
The bosum of Aphrodite’s waiting
I like em
I like em
So often
Milky mornings
And time
Milky mornings

THE POOR MANS’ SNOW

Well all the lights are up now and we’re still in October
And everything’s got colder just a taste of what’s to come
And all the villages are empty as people bar the shutters
And the leaves are in the gutters, better sleep till spring

Well the rich ones are all dancing on the poor folk and her children
She’s worked so hard to fill them, and keep them safe and warm
Still asking questions of the masters, but she doesn,t like the answers
And someone’s going to help the child as she leaves home today

Chorus And soon will come the snow, and the poor man doesn’t know it’s snow
It’s just a little silver that he’s caught between his fingers
So don’t you be downhearted, cos there’s no need to suffer
and someone’s bound to help the child. As she leaves home today

Well he’s blessed with good intentions, stands so tall against the weather
He said let’s be together, kept you close when it was cold
And brought you whisky home for christmas, that made you feel unable
And chained you to the table, with a smile and walked away

You told me secrets from a distance, and we stood and watched the ocean
And the rain cut in like questions, brought the colour to your face
The face that watches from the window, remind you of your lovers
So you hide beneath the covers, and try to sleep till spring

Chorus And soon will come the snow, and the poor man doesn’t know it’s snow
It’s just a little silver caught between his freezing fingers
And the last of all the crazy ones goes missing with his children
And the family’s going to have to do the interview today

Chorus And soon will come the snow, and the poor man doesn’t know it’s snow
It’s just a little silver that he’s caught between his fingers
So don’t you be down hearted, mothers don’t you suffer
Cos someone’s here to help the child. Cos she came home today

THERE’S A FRIEND

“Strange things happen on the Kelpie rock. EYEEYEEYE EYEYEEYE……………
I wouldn’t go there for anything

There’s a friend, you are.
So dear to me today.
Oh! Let’s go down to the bridges.
And watch the birds, and let’s talk of many things,
That do concern us now.
Oh I have made mistakes and told you things I shouldn’t.
But you are my friend.
I know I’ll be forgiven.
Let’s go and save the world together.
Let’s go and make new life.
Together we’ll go home.
The way it is forever.

There’s a dump over there, look there’s an old chair.
Ain’t it safer to say, SING
‘RUFTY TUFTY’
Together in that way it’s such a feeling.
Go to the meeting and sing.
A sausage here, a sausage there.

Well there’s a rumpus going on,
In the house we’ve had an intruder.
In the house he was so feared, and he
Frightened Alison, ducked down
Ran up the street like a hound,
No he never turned round.

Tommy Gander he’s a scream,
Turn him loose in a sea of green

“I remember, Old Mrs. Barnsley from Bradford,
Very nice person, very nice,
Told me, in confidence mind,
Dog’d died.
Very unfortunate
Very nice person
Very nice DOG!”

Oh! I’ve seen punch and judy men in the town.
I’ve seen them frown, just look at the children,
They don’t want anyone else but him.
It’s the punch and judy man
Catch him if you can in his multi coloured van.

“I followed him round the corner and he did the most awful thing
Behind a bush, behind that bush
I name thee SATAN.”

There’s a friend. There’s a friend.
There’s a friend to guide you, and take your hand
All the billowing winds they push you to each other.
Fall to the ground. Like you don’t make a sound.
We’ll go home
Back to the open fire of our hearts home.
There’s a friend.

THE WRITING OF PLENTY

Writing of plenty now
Images of childhood
Writing of plenty now
Brilliant signs, you are mine
And only ours
And only ours
Are now

And when I whisper
When I whisper
Hear, the likely lad is here
Making of the harmony
Singing you bring to me

Thula thula
Thula thula
Thula thula
Thula thula

Writing of plenty now
Writer of the heart and
Shoulder in the little tiny town
Tiny little town
Tiny little mound

Oh Silbury wisdom
Waiting for the child
All alone
And smiling

Thula thula
Thula thula
Thula thula
Thula thula

TOG IS BETTER NOW

Last week our cat was ill, now TOG IS BETTER NOW
We took her to the vet for a special thing, no TOG IS BETTER NOW
Oh she loves to fight with her sister and in the garden she does lovely things
Now TOG IS BETTER NOW

Last week we took her to the vet and he put a booster and a micro ship in her
And when she came home she sat on the edge of the couch
And she looked very poorly cos she didn’t look anything like herself
TOG IS BETTER NOW
Oh we were very worried about her
And Alison was in tears all most of the week, and the vet came round
TOG IS BETTER NOW

Couldn’t be tempted with a sardine or anything. Or even old trout

He’s a very lovely vet is Jonathan, Alison couldn’t remember his name (Jonathan)
It’s to see her enjoying her tummy-tickles and running about in the garden
With all her friends TOG IS BETTER NOW
And her meow is getting much much louder now
But not nearly as loud as Pippin’s as she sits on the bed, now TOG IS BETTER NOW

Well she didn’t really want to get in the box, and she cringed as she
sat on the table and then she had the pill. TOG IS BETTER NOW
They stuck a thing up her bottom to tell the time or the temperature
and that’s the end of the story because TOG IS BETTER NOW
Oh she’s brought love and light into our lives and she’s the most beautiful pussy
I’m stroking her tail right now
As she sits on me lap
TOG IS BETTER
TOG IS BETTER NOW

TOPICAL TIMOTHY

Let’s make it real, the purpose of this is to go from the front as we
let our lives run parellel dancing away from him and old
JB, Arthur and Timothy, went down, down to the Cavity
drinking, smoking, and spinning the news of the day,, Be Love

Listen to us, we’re not welcome now. It’s about prejudice you see
you don’t understand us, You don’t understand us
we’re so gentle and calm, don’t raise the alarm, come back to the farm.

Let’s hear a great big clap, for the ones who’ve made it through the gap
out of the trenches and downstream, hurry in the gully, and
topical Timothy’s made a new friend, he’s made a new friend on the
backs of the argument, now they’re going too far, but he’s got a new friend
“of course I’m your friend”

Chorus
And there’s a crowd of people, waving to you, over the rainbow
They’re smiling, their older, now, oh look at them offering their,
Gentle souls, they’re singing and dancing
It’s that man again.

It’s a ghost of the sound, look at the steam from his ears
Timothy’s sensing a reality check, cos these are the only
Brilliant minds in the world.
Oh, oh lay down your arms cos the future’s looking rosier then,
Despite the tears in their eyes, despite the steam in their ears.

Oh look at me now, look at me go , look at the flow, the flow rising up right now
We’re chasing hares, the general consencous has caught them unawares.

So don’t let them stay, they want it all and they won’t go away
And he’s bought him an island, and he sits on his own in the sunshine
We’ve been lots of shouting and screaming and talk of maybe repealing and
I’m still forever Ealing, fabulous old days in the world

Chorus

And there’s a crowd of people, waving to you, over the rainbow
They’re smiling, their older, now, oh look at them offering their,
Gentle souls, they’re singing and dancing
It’s that man again
It’s that man again
It’s that man again.

TRIPLE FIRE HORSE FOR ME

Well there was a hag down at the mill, where she set me astray
Oh is it not deceiptful of thee woman, I should be betrayed?
Oh it’s not me who betrayed you so desirous of the words and fame
But the miracles of Ronan turned your head and drove you to sorrow and shame

Chorus And a white horse for land
And a grey horse for sea
And a bay horse for burial
Triple fire horse for me

Oh would said she outrun his horse, if you could be king
So grab the reigns and take a blow, a blow across the chin
And though shalt not have a feast till the challenge of the thing is done
As the tripe fire horse flies by them all as fast as she can run

Chorus
And a white horse for land
And a grey horse for sea
And a bay horse for burial
Triple fire horse for me

Oh nothing’s higher than heaven, nothing is deeper than the sea
As a cry was heard from within the horse, remove these thorns from me

Chorus
And a white horse for land
And a grey horse for sea
And a bay horse for burial
Triple fire horse for me

And oh, the venom that seized the spear, venom in him who made It
And venom in him who laid her low, cos if he did he knew it
And oh the venom in your heart, venom in the hand that brought her down
And where she lies the fire horses gallop across the plains in the racing wind

Chorus
And a white horse for land
And a grey horse for sea
And a bay horse for burial
Triple fire horse for me
And a white horse for land
And a grey horse for sea
And a bay horse for burial
Triple fire horse for me

WAKE FROM ANGELS FACES

See the water, fade into sand
Satin shore against the water
Watch the moon, go trailing from mast to wave
For the exiles fade into natures dawn
Fade into nature’s dawn

I will rise from my waking hour
And wait before the day
Gently outside amongst the crane flies
As they go after me with something silent.

I watched you sleeping
Since Friday the kindness came
It’s a fading light
That makes me scar from you
Turn away from angel’s faces
There’s no trace of all the silents
Oh, keep me on the way believing
Wake from angel’s faces
Wake from angel’s faces

WILKINS

Greasy bacon smelling out the fridge
Hooded riders on the windy ridge
Don’t be like that call me Simpkins
Heavens sake don’t call me Wilkins
Wilkins all the way for us to see and do. It’s
Wilkins, Wilkins, Wilkins

Old Wilkie doesn’t tell a joke or two
Old Wilkie can’t remember who is who

Double standards, rocking at your pavement
Watch the way the wave went
It’s close to town
I’m closer now
Oh, I love you

Wilkins, Wilkins, Wilkins

I did not say Wilson, I said Wilkins
